What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

In general, cosmetic dentistry enhances a patient’s smile by improving the size, shape, alignment, and color of their teeth. Although cosmetic dental procedures mainly focus on aesthetics, they also improve oral health. For example, misaligned teeth are difficult to thoroughly brush and floss as some areas are hard to reach. Straightening teeth allows a patient to brush and floss effectively which prevents plaque and tartar buildup.

What are the Types of Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dental procedures vary. Therefore, each patient will be recommended a unique plan to achieve his or her dental goals. Common cosmetic dental procedures include:

  • Teeth whitening– Teeth whitening is one of the most affordable and simple procedures. Essentially, teeth whiten up to 8 shades. Results can last up to 3 years.
  • Dental veneers– veneers are thin laminates that are custom-made to improve the appearance of teeth. In addition, veneers are bonded onto the surface of the tooth, restoring and improving the shape, size, and color.
  • Dental bonding– this procedure uses tooth-colored composite resin to improve a tooth’s aesthetic look.
  • Inlays and Onlays– the two involve indirect restorative procedures in cosmetic dentistry. The dental material is constructed outside the mouth as a whole-single, solid piece, fitted in the mouth at a specified cavity. They are usually used in mild to moderate damaged, decayed or discolored teeth to restore the normal function and appearance of the teeth.
  • Dental crowns– In brief, crowns are among the most common cosmetic dentistry procedures. Crowns are tooth-like caps that restore the function and appearance of teeth. They are also used to cover dental implants and are used in conjunction with dental bridges.
  • Dental implants– are artificial tooth roots that are inserted into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. Implants are preferred as they offer simple maintenance and can last a very long time.
  • Dental bridges – replace one or more adjacent missing teeth.
  • Dentures- are ideal for patients who are missing some or all teeth. These removable mouth appliances are very comfortable and natural-looking thanks to modern technology.

Invisalign Fairfax VA

Invisalign is a set of custom-made clear aligners that straighten teeth. This amazing orthodontic treatment is ideal for patients that do not want traditional braces. In fact, patients with mild to moderately misaligned teeth are encouraged to seek a consultation. Straightening teeth is more than a cosmetic choice. It allows patients to maintain a healthier smile by brushing and flossing teeth more thoroughly. For example, impacted teeth can create areas of plaque and tartar buildup. Every patient is unique and so will their treatment plan. Learn more about Invisalign below and contact us today.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign is a discreet orthodontic treatment. It can correct gapped teeth, mild bites (including underbite, overbite, open bite or crossbite) and crowded teeth.

These clear aligner trays are computer-generated from an impression of the patient’s teeth. The aligners are made of SmartTrack® material that gradually shifts the teeth correctly into place. Only a certified dental professional can prescribe Invisalign.

The Invisalign aligner trays are interchanged every 2 weeks for a period of 6-18 months. Each new aligner usually feels slightly different since they are designed to continue shifting your teeth. For best results, the aligners are to be worn for at least 23 hours, including while you sleep. The good news is, you can easily remove it when you want to eat, brush, or floss.

Even though Invisalign aligners are a solid piece of plastic, they are classified as braces and not retainers since they actively move your teeth to shape your jaw and mouth. Whereas, retainers are used to hold your teeth in place.

Benefits of Invisalign

The clear aligners allow for discreet orthodontic treatment. It is great for teens and adults who want to correct their smile without metal.

Also, since they are made of SmartTrack® material, Invisalign is more comfortable than traditional metal braces. Plus, they can be easily removed when you need to eat or brush your teeth.

Lastly, other orthodontic treatments require dietary restrictions. Anything too hard, sticky or chewy are off-limits. However, with Invisalign, these issues are not a problem. You can simply remove the trays and eat anything you want. Just remember to brush your teeth before reinserting your aligners. Maintaining great dental hygiene will prevent the build-up of bacteria and bad breath. In short, bacteria build-up starts off as plaque and hardens into tartar. Both can lead to tooth decay, infection, and periodontal disease. For this reason, brush in the morning, after you eat, and before bed.
